Https:// is a pain in the arse!

stupid-internet

The vast majority of web users simply do not know what https is. Https is a con and setting it up properly is nearly impossible to do. What is more there aren’t any real benefit to using https versus not using it unless you are a terrorist/peado and the police are listening in on your website and internet connection. In my opinion https has just been made as a for big tech firms to get money out of us website owners (we have been doing just fine for the last 20 years without it so why do we need it all of a sudden now?!) and because it is made to impossible for the average person to set up properly you are also are going to have to get someone to set it up for you costing you even more money.

Even if you do not set up https on your site you are still going to run into problems designed to force you to get https whether you like it or not. For example Google is now displaying insecure messages on their chrome browser for all sites that are not https what is more google also thinks that it is a good idea to give https sites a ranking boost in its search engine even if the site does not even need it such as personal blogs.

This may sound all well and good but google is not doing this for users it is simply doing it to to boost sale for their SSL certificates that they have now started to sell so this has nothing to do with making the internet a more secure place but have everything to do with making more money!

Even smaller web hosts are doing it because it is the “in thing” at the moment so are obsessed with it but coupled with their stupidity or greed now means that 9 times out of 10 when you host your site on a shared host because the host has misconfigured the server it means that when you visit the https:// version of your site you will not see your site or an error message but instead yo will see a random other persons site, forcing you to spend you time and money sorting out a problem that should never have even arisen in the first place if stupid https didn’t exist! Some hosts have other motives other than just forcing you to buy one of their certificates or a dedicated ip address, some hosts simply don’t want you to set up https on your site and hope that you do not notice so that they can display their own site on the https version of you site to piggyback seo power from your domain.

How to get rid of Https:// the easy way!

The best Way I have found to totally get rid of this annoying problem is to generate a sll certificate in your cpanel (https://www.digicert.com/csr-creation-apache-cpanel.htm) and then assign it to your domain name.

Once you have done that (you will find that the https version of your site will point to your own site however you will find that browser will show a warning message before letting you on the site and things on the site such as styles and images maybe broken) you must then add this rule to the top of your hTacccess file (placing it on the top means that this code is processed first and you will not encounter any unexpected errors.)

  1. I agree. Https is pointless, for instance if someone does have a virus on their computer and someone is snooping on their computer going on https sites is the least of their problems.
