  • My home’s BT broadband has about the same speed as old 56k dial up.

agree, there are so many factors that affect speed it would be impossible to specify an exact speed without going onsite to the customer first and running the relevant tests. two houses side by side could have massively different speeds simply due to the internal wiring set up alone.

I have some sympathy with the providers because everyone will get a different speed and there’s no real way of them knowing what that will be. The theoretical maximum seems as good a way as any of doing it.

But equally BT are hideous. Terrible customer service, awful tech support and pricing that’s so unclear it’s got to be deliberate.

IMHO, they really should not be allowed to advertise ‘up to’. 75 baud would still be covered by that ‘up to’.

Ah, the old ‘up to’ trick. The most meaningless phrase in advertising, used with impunity by a range of products. ”reduces dandruff by up to 100%’…technically means ‘ this may reduce dandruff a little bit, or it might complet…[Read more]

We constantly receive “come back to us and get up to 3.5 mb broadband”. No one in the postcode has ever got more than 1 mb and speeds remain around 0.7mb. To me that’s fraud.

  • I had the opposite service with BT. When out village went live with FTTC they offered 36 or 72mb. BT said i was unlikely to get better than 36 and put me on that (£5) cheaper. Year later they wrote and said i was going to 50-something mb no extra charge.

Switched to talk talk anyway and same wires only get 24 mb. Still enough for me, and cheaper…[Read more]

It’s about time the ASA took them to task.

But that being said atleast your not with vrigin media. Virgin media totally sucks and you definitely dont get anywhere near the speeds what you pay for.

  • Nerdkid replied to the topic BT Broadband Scam? in the forum General Chat 4 days, 8 hours ago

It’s two different technologies. Copper for ADSL. If you live next to the exchange you may get the advertised speed. But, if you live some distance away the speed will be less.

You could ask if they do a 50Mb fibre package, but again that may not give advertised speed. Thou the fibre can go to gigabit speeds, it comes down to contention ratios…[Read more]

I had an interesting chat with BT today.

I currently pay a lot for unlimited fibre broadband, which promises speeds of up to 72mb. However they concede that in my area, its only likely to be “up to 52mb”.

Using various broadband speed checkers I find that I get around 23mb.

So I enquired: “I can only get 23mb on your top fibre package, so it…[Read more]

  • Don’t rush it.

(This is going to turn into a minor rant warning) My OH had fairly minor surgery on 19 January and has had to visit the doctors every day since to have the wound dressed. As he’s not driving, I have to take him and it’s playing havoc with life, work and the universe generally! As the GP surgery is not open at the weekend, we have…[Read more]

  • You could go to your local pharmacy for advise. The Scottish pharmacies deal with minor injuries and common issues.

  • I changed dressings every 2-3 days. I didn’t put anything on any of the areas (major wound or where skin was taken for graft) until they were healed. My most important find was Allevyn gentle border for the hole or the petroleum infused dressings for the skin donation site, the latter didn’t stick and really helped.

Try not to keep looking at it…[Read more]

Honestly, don’t change it too often if it’s not showing signs of infection. Every time you change it, you will be removing the top layer of the wound healing process. Give it chance to make some progress.

  • Thank you cam that is very much appreciated I have got some sterile dressings today so hopefully they will be OK – when I went to A&E they gave me massive dressings that looked like cling film! – but I will confess I have been changing the dressing daily (against the advice of the A&E consultant who saw me) as I find it so horrible to look at the…[Read more]

It needs to be covered but with the right dressing which is hard to advise without seeing the wound. Ideally you want to be changing the dressing as infrequently as possible, as every dressing change, the wound cools from optimum healing temperature. A pharmacist may be able to take a look and suggest something you can buy over the counter.

  • Hmmmm, I do hear what you are saying, but I have left it uncovered since 3pm and it has dried out nicely, it is so much easier like that The arm is a revolting grey colour all around, yuck!!!

I actually don’t care if it does scar, I have plenty already and I am too old to be bothered…..oh dear, what a dilemma now :/

  • I wouldn’t expose it to the air because it will get infected and that would be way worse pain, and would scar as well.
