  • fred replied to the topic I've given up diet drinks in the forum Health 1 week ago

I mostly drink San Pelligrino. Water, so no sweetner, but slightly fizzy as opposed to huge bubbles.

If I have tap water I will squirt some lemon juice in.

When I left work I 2014 I was drinking 3 or 4 cans of Diet Coke a day. I also craved sugar, so had ice cream. I can see that the Diet Coke made my body prepare for sugar, so when none came I…[Read more]

Why do I have a feeling the worst pub in Britain will be in the Edinburgh area or Birmingham

@el I have to disagree, compared with Glasgow, Edinburgh is a genteel and respectable place.

In fact we’ve been living just down from a pub/nightclub for years and in all that time there’s only been two or three fires, only one of which was arson, a…[Read more]

I have a xiaomi mi robot vacuum… sits in its dock, then at scheduled times turns on it’s sensors (all 17 of them) maps out the room and starts vacuuming.

I was skeptical, but wow. I get a message on the app to say when complete and a detailed map of where has been cleaned. Goes from timber to carpet with no issues. Easiest way to know how…[Read more]

Seriously, get as many strong painkillers as you can from doctor or dentist today or tomorrow so you have them ready. My chest looked like someone had put their boot on it for leverage when the bruising came out, so it wasn’t just my face that hurt. Your post reads like you weren’t given anything for home use except antibiotics which obviously…[Read more]

  • fred replied to the topic Getting taxation right in the forum General Chat 3 weeks, 6 days ago

There should be no private companies given any government contracts that don’t hold their tax accounts in the UK.

@nev What if they are not wholly UK based? Virgin may have started here, Amazon and Google didn’t.

Corporation tax is a mess. What would you like to tax? There is already VAT on the sale, government takes 1/6th of the transaction.…[Read more]

  • fred replied to the topic Windows 10 won't shut down in the forum Tech 4 weeks ago

I wouldn’t worry about it myself.
All the varieties of Windows I’ve had, I just kill the power at the plug socket and it has always booted up fine.
Make sure you’ve saved any important work first, but I think most things autosave anyway (verification happily accepted)

  • @howard It is worth reading article in full – particularly the penultimate paragraph. So basically we can summarise the article as “our predictions for 2018 (before UK leaves the EU) – very good. After UK leaves single market and Brexit becomes real – not so good”.

Of course this may still be pessimistic, since the terms of May’s “phase 1” deal…[Read more]
