  • Testing for what are known as “drugs of abuse” (DAT: “drugs of abuse testing”) is not done by analytical chemistry, but by automated immunoassay.

There’s a good Wikipedia article to explain how that works, and you can find more information on the web, such as this very informative brochure from Thermo Fisher (just look at the list of things that…[Read more]

That’s an awful story but you’ve nothing to feel guilty about.

I badly injured and very nearly killed my dog by accident a few years back and I still feel sick at the memory. It wasn’t your fault and you did everything you could. Do talk to your friends when you can, it won’t be easy but it should help.

Might be worth a letter to the environment…[Read more]

Never had any issues with our propane freezing. As others have said, could be ice in the regulator/changeover valve.

Obvious question: The bottles not empty is it?

Train trip across that famous viaduct? The Harry Potter one? Carnforth railway station?

Why not go into your local travel agency who will know good places to get to from Manchester. You don’t want a 4 hour transfer the other end.

Your friend, ex friend? sounds weird. You surely didn’t have a contract? I’d wait for the solicitor’s letter to appear before I did anything other than avoid this peculiar woman.

The way it works is the difficulty of mining scales automatically to reflect the mining capacity (network hash rate). So if someone comes out with better mining ASICs then after a few months the amount of work to receive a certain amount of coins is increased. If the network hash rate stopped growing then the difficulty would not be increased.…[Read more]

Our local authority uses the JustPark app. I see on that that you can rent out your own parking space. I haven’t looked into it, but if someone were parking on my drive (If I had one, that is. Anyway, how bloody rude, even on my virtual drive!) I imagine I could set it up on the app with a stiff parking rate. At least a tenner a day. How one…[Read more]

  • Far more people probably ‘abuse’ the benefits system in that they make it a lifestyle choice – rather than seeking very low paid jobs they are actually better off being in receipt of benefits.

@songbird there is a scandal there right enough, but if anyone is culpable for that it’s not the ones you’re looking to demonise.

How is it right that…[Read more]

  • @nobroo Goodness that’s bad luck, hope it doesn’t trouble you too much now. I bloody hope it isnt arthritis, I’m not even 30 yet but I suppose it’s a possibility!

  • @oldguy Fair point about treating the symptoms! Though work buddy goes every 2 weeks or so and is sometimes in more pain after, seems odd to me but I’ve no personal experience of it, so maybe the gains are better than the losses.

Pilates instructor is really good and hands on, so hopefully she’s the same as a physio. She’s very correct and…[Read more]

  • @mo That sounds really sensible, thanks!

I actually go to Pilates weekly and my instructor is a physio. I meant to discuss the issue with her this week, but it slipped my mind as I was in a rush. So I have contacted her for some advice. I am insured through work so could claim back some of the costs

  • Thanks all for your feedback, some varied opinions (which is to be expected I suppose!).

I’m a bit dubious about chiros to be honest, my work buddy uses one but it only ever seems to fix the symptoms and never gets to the crux of the issue. Plus her chiro refers to themself as “Doctor” which I find very misleading… anyway…

    I think the physio…[Read more]

  • @troll Have they been useful in your experience? I just assumed a GP visit would equal a referral to physio and a long waiting list. I can go privately to physio anyway, if that seems to be a sensible course of action. But if it is wiser to go to GP first, then of course I’d do that.

  • I have been having intermittent pain in my back around my right shoulder blade for quite some time now. It’s not exactly preventing me from doing anything but it is uncomfortable and I am aware of it a lot of the time – just a dull ache. It feels like a muscle pain and I can feel a sort of “knot” where the painful area is.
    I’ve never actually seen…[Read more]

  • They still have a long way to go, and you understand this if you visit them and scratch away at the surface. China has too many issues internally ( keeping a lid on 1 billion people must try any government) really to confront any one imho.

Ah, but I didn’t say they had to confront anyone, in order to achieve world domination. It’s their principal…[Read more]

  • I have had experience with this terrible terrible company in the past. I bought a bed from them for £600.. it never arrived after tirelessly trying to chasing them up and being on hold on the phone for a whole hour customer services simply told me I had no order. You will eventually get your money back if you open up a dispute with your credit…[Read more]

  • I can’t believe China wanting to ignore thousands of years of keeping to itself to wanting to seek world domination.

@troll On the contrary, they’ve pretty much said explicitly that they want the 21st century to be the Chinese century. Here in Australia their relatively aggressive foreign policies – South China Sea islands, aid-as-occupancy in…[Read more]

  • Bought my wife one for Christmas because she really wanted one. Even though I thought it was a waste of money I reluctantly schelped to the shops and got one.

Wouldnt be without it now, it’s fantastic.
