Maybe it’s an indication that people have a better understanding of how clever they are, than how attractive/entertaining they are?

  • I would stay well away from Google AdWords! It is a scam. At best you will be just breaking even… most of the time you will just be throwing your money away. It does depend on what your selling but for most things, conversion rates are really lousy and if you’re not selling exactly what people are looking for at the right price (which is hard if you are selling creative handmade things and have the google tax eating away at your profits) you won’t even get your money back.

Google basically makes its money from ripping off people and forcing everyone to use AdWords because they make it impossible for the small guys to rank in the normal results.

I’d be concerned about going to bed with an undiagnosed swelling of that size near my airway.

Is it worth a 111 call, just to be on the safe side?

Either way, hope it clears up soon.

I don’t think the idea of Putin the malign puppeteer working step by step through a detailed master plan in pursuit of a clear and detailed goals makes much sense. I suspect the reality is it’s lots and lots of little bits of opportunistic intervention working broadly toward a goal of a relatively stronger Russia and a relatively stronger Putin. His retirement plan and legacy is more interesting, what comes next, a clean-up, reform and real development or as seems more likely more militaristic nationalism covering the cracks caused by kleptocracy as conditions worsen for ordinary Russians and their neighbours.

  • Totally agree! Would happily pay a bit more if big stuff fitted, the current situation is that retailers assume being tall and having broad shoulders means you have an epic gut resulting in most shirts and jackets resembling teepees.

For anyone needing athletic, tall man smart-casual clothes that look acceptable in the office the Arc’teryx A2B polo shirts and chinos are pretty dam good.

Having sold things for years on eBay with no problem, everything I sell recently seems to cause no end of problems. I sold an item last weekend and sent a reminder to buyer to pay as still didn’t have the money a day later and I wanted to get the thing sent. Later that day I received an email from PayPal to say that payer had sent funds but it was coming via e-cheque and not to send it til PayPal had confirmed payment had cleared in my account. I’d never encountered this, so did some googling and found it’s quite common if person doesn’t have funds in their PayPal and no card accredited to account. I messaged seller to explain what was happening and that as soon as I had confirmation, I would send item.
Buyer messaged me on Wednesday to say her end said she had paid. I checked…[Read more]

  • If the problem is just glare then surely a monitor with a matt screen will be the answer.

For eye problems, instead of reading glasses, I measured the distance from pupil to screen and got the optician to set the lenses to this focal length, which was a bit more than for reading.

You seem like a real jerk.. surprised if anyone actually likes you in real life if that’s your attitude.

  • kal posted a new activity comment 3 months, 3 weeks ago

I’m not the most sensitive man in the world, certainly not the most PC, but I would say the suggestion that the Jew on a team should automatically “handle the money” is anti Semitic, even if it was said as a joke.

As for Hartlepool, well that’s a place, not a race.

    • What if it was a friend of his who said it?

      What if he’d said it?

      Is Judaism as race?

      • Judaism is (arguably) both a religion and a race but don’t worry about it.

I think if there had never been any Jewish converts then the race bit would be pretty solid. But conversions have muddied the waters.

For instance, because I’m not a Cohen, I don’t know how much (if any) of my long term ancestry goes back to Abraham and how much to converts from over the millennia.

I don’t find the original video funny either, and definitely not as funny as he thinks he is. But do you think he has committed a crime, because in the context of a stupid video he repeats an offensive statement? Or even do you think the crime so bad that he deserves to go to prison?

    I don’t.

“Re the universe being infinite, my understanding […] is that it’s not infinite, …”

Well we don’t really know, since we can’t see further than the observable horizon. The default model assumes that it is infinite (but that just means “large compared to the observable horizon”).

” … it’s been expanding from a size of effectively zero at finite speed for a finite time, so it can’t be infinite.”

Not really. We don’t have physics that would apply at time=0, size=0, since we know that currently known physics breaks down at the Planck scale and we don’t have working quantum-gravity theories. The default model would thus assume an infinite extent of stuff round about the Planck time.

“However, it does extend out past the distance we can see because at some points in the…[Read more]

Exactly, just like no one in particle physics believes that the results of the Standard Model of particle physics will hold up to infinite energy scales, I presume no one in cosmology believes that the Standard Model of the universe actually works perfectly outside the region we have data.

Sadly I feel your pain. I had two teeth out a few months ago. As others have said do not rinse out for 24hrs, then when you do, rinse out twice a day with warm salt water. It really is revolting. Try to keep your tongue away, as tempting as it maybe to feel it.

Keep to soft foods so you don’t have to chew. Painkillers will help with discomfort. If the area starts throbbing get to your dentist pronto.

As others have said, don’t beat yourself up. You put your life at risk to try and save the dog, there was nothing more you could do. There is a long and tragic list of people who risked their lives to save pets, and didn’t make it. Be thankful you weren’t another victim.

If you’re feeling guilty or awkward about going round, that is to be expected. But the longer you leave it the harder it will be. Perhaps text them and arrange to pop over on Friday. Bring a bottle of wine/whisky/brandy and have a wake? I’d imagine your friends are just as traumatized as you are, probably more so.

I think political correctness is probably a long way down the list of causes.

The main problem is that bad food tastes nice and people are short on will power. Britain has had a bad diet since industrialization separated the people from the land, it’s just that a 14 hour day down the factory and poverty wages kept you trim.

Bad food also makes you feel good when you’re depressed, like when you e been called a fat bastard repeatedly.

And when the government tries to advise, we’re told that it’s a nanny state, and parents should be allowed to pass kebabs through the school gates to stop their kids having to eat vegetables.

Throw in parents that can’t cook, those that don’t have time to cook, and convenience food that maxes out flavor and minimizes cost then you have genera…[Read more]

A few lumps of rotten fish or cat urine put through the bonnet vents would be easy to do.

All these people saying You can’t do that it’s illegal, like deflating the tyres, Do you really think the police nowadays have time for this petty stuff?

    • You would think but the police are very petty. Here’s a true story from a couple years back when I had some one park on my driveway.

      1) I put a polite note to the guy behind his wipers. He screwed it up and threw it at my front door.

      2) Asked him nicely.

      3) Wrote “Do not park here”on his windscreen. Two police arrived and said they were going to arrest me now for criminal damage unless I removed it completely. I had a long talk with them. They were stupid and bloody minded.

    Yes.

My shoulder injury became more painful afterwards.

That will just have been coincidence, as will most success stories you hear.

It’s pretty well studied, and isn’t better than other placebos, with the possible exception of offering some mild benefits for certain types of pain management.

Just get a massage instead, it’ll do you the same amount of good (very little), won’t carry the risk of infection, and will be more pleasant than being stabbed with needles (unless you’re into that sort of thing, that is).

Flavor your water, Alainax. I got a water container and steeped lemon, mint, cucumber overnight which is amazing, although I worry about the effect of the lemon juice on my tooth enamel.
